SUMMER '18 TEXTILE CLASSES

Come learn about summer textile class offerings while learning the beauty of natural dye through this one day all ages workshop. Turn your boring old clothes into bright new uniquely hand dyed pieces through the popular process of up-cycling. Learn the basics of creating various organic dye vats & the many ways to play with dye using basic materials you can easily find in your kitchen. Some fabric will be provided, but feel free to bring along some light colored natural fabrics & clothing to experiment with (cotton, linen, wool, etc.)! 

PAPER & FABRIC MARBLING WORKSHOP (ages 14 & up)
Sunday, June 17th, 11 am - 4 pm, $150

Suminagashi is the Japanese art of marbling by floating ink on the surface of water. In this one-day workshop, students learn the basics of this centuries-old monoprint technique through guided instruction & experimentation. Students will learn fundamentals including materials selection, how to prepare a marbling vat, and the best pigments to use for lasting patterns. Students will develop a collection of swatches & items on paper & fabric using wind, vibration, combs, brushes, & chemical reaction to create surface patterns and compositions. This class is designed to focus on a learned skill rather than a final product. Lunch provided.
 

MACHINE KNITTING 101 (ages 14 & up)
CLASS: Saturday, July 7 - Sunday, July 8th, 11 am - 5 pm, $300
OPEN STUDIOS: Monday July 9 - Friday July 13, 4 pm - 7 pm

In this 12 hour, 2 day class, students will learn the basics of machine knitting on their own individual standard gauge knitting machine. Students will learn the cast on & cast off processes, how to get a finished edge, how to increase and decrease, and garment finishing. Students will walk away with a collection of swatches or a finished project like a scarf, tank top, hat, or socks. All materials for sample making and learning techniques are included. Any additional materials will need to be supplied by the student based on their vision. This class is designed to focus on a learned skill rather than a final product. Weekend intensive students will have access to open studio time for free for up to 5 days after the class, to put their new knowledge to practice. Lunch provided. 

LAP LOOM WEAVING WORKSHOP (ages 14 & up)
Saturday, July 21st, 12 pm - 4 pm, $125 non-members, $100 members
HOUSTON CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY CRAFT

In this workshop, students will learn how to set up your loom using stretcher bars and nails. Students will learn how to weave plain weave, twill, basket weave, herringbone, and tapestry. Create various textures & patterns using a variety of yarns provided during the class. Experiment with shapes and colors freely as you try out new ways of basic weaving. This class is designed to focus on a learned skill rather than a final product. Take your loom home and continue to create after class. 

MACHINE KNITTING 102 (ages 14 & up)
CLASS: Saturday, August 11 - Sunday, August 12, 11 am - 5 pm, $300
OPEN STUDIO: Monday, August 13 - Sunday, August 19, 4 pm - 7 pm

In this 12-hour, 2 day class, students will continue expanding their machine knitting skills and understanding on their standard gauge knitting machine. This class covers more advanced patterning techniques, such as tuck stitches, tension swatches, cables, weaving techniques, and other hand - manipulated stitches. Students will gain a much deeper understanding of the capabilities of a knitting machine & will leave with a collection of swatches and a small project based on their vision. This class is designed to focus on a learned skill rather than a final product. Weekend intensive students will have access to open studio time for free for up to 7 days after the class, to put their new knowledge to practice. Lunch provided.

Animals-Ages 6–8   Investigate animals of the rain forest and the zoo, create imaginary animals, and paint a portrait of a favorite pet. Use paint, paper, clay, and found objects to create fun 2-D and 3-D animals in natural settings. ///// J209-4 Animals 2:00–4:00 p.m. $165

 

WEEK 7: JULY 23–27

Island Art Adventures-Ages 6–8   Use clay, tempera paint, paper, and other materials to draw, build, sculpt, and paint an island world of your own. Draw a detailed treasure map and build a chest with clues, sculpt a miniature island, and illustrate a story about your island art adventure. ///// J202-3 Island Art 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. $165

Drawing and Painting-Ages 6–8    Exercise your imagination as you use tempera paint, watercolor, and watercolor crayons in a variety of painting projects. Advance your drawing skills, create, and have fun! ///// J203-7 Drawing and 2:00–4:00 p.m. $165

 

WEEK 8: JULY 30–AUGUST 3

Under the Sea–Ages 4–6   Under the Sea Create a sunken-treasure collage, a starfish mobile, clay fish, and other aquatic wonders as you explore life in the ocean. ///// J150-4 Under the Sea 9:00–11:00 a.m. $165

Sculpture Adventures-Ages 6–8   Sculpture Adventures Mix and match materials to make a variety of 3-D projects. Use clay, plaster craft, wire, found objects, and more to create your own exciting masterpieces. ///// J204-7 Sculpture 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. $165

Drawing and Painting-Ages 6–8    This course provides the technical instruction needed to refine existing skills.
